This story begins and ends with Aracy de Carvalho. When it began, she was a 26-year-old mother of a five-year-old boy who, separated from her husband, decided to make a more drastic journey away from her social milieu and the circles she had moved in. It led her to raise her sails and head off to Hamburg, thus initiating a veritable migratory sojourn. At the end, as an elderly woman, she was awarded the title “Righteous among Nations,” for facilitating the emigration of German Jews who were thus saved from extermination and awarded the chance to begin their lives anew, in Brazil. In between was Aracy’s second marriage, to the man who was to become the greatest Brazilian writer of his times, João Guimarães Rosa. She had met him during her years in Hamburg, hence, at a decisive and particularly charged moment in her trajectory.
