The design and testing of an engineering system are crucial phases in the advancement of any technology, including solar gas turbines. Ideally, the design of a solar gas turbine (SGT) should be theoretically optimized, allowing for the construction and testing of a tangible system based on simulation results. Currently, the prototyping of SGTs primarily involves modifying existing conventional gas turbine engines. However, a review of the literature reveals a deficiency of standards for testing concentrating solar power technologies, which poses challenges for SGT development. Efforts are underway to establish such standards, which may also aid in the testing of SGTs. Despite some testing initiatives, the majority of projects remain at the demonstration scale, with a notable absence of commercial-scale SGT power plants. This chapter discusses various challenges impeding the development of SGT technology, including technological maturity, financial and policy barriers, and critical technical factors. Addressing these challenges is essential for enhancing the competitiveness of SGTs on the market.
