Usually, decision-making about project development is influenced by the costs and benefits over the lifetime of a project. In this vein, the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) is one of the most important metrics for assessing the economic performance of energy technologies. Relatively low theoretical values of LCOE have been reported for solar gas turbine (SGT) systems, which compares very well with LCOE values for some coal power plants. This indicates that the economic performance of the SGT technology is theoretically approaching parity with conventional thermal power plants. At present, most of the utility-scale concentrating solar power (CSP) plants are based on the steam Ranken cycle. Electricity produced by steam-based CSP technology is currently not competitive against coal-based electricity. It is therefore not surprising that the power block of the third-generation CSP technology is expected to be based on the gas turbine cycle. This shows that the SGT system will play a key role in the advancement of concentrating solar power. Details about the economic performance of solar gas turbines are presented and discussed in this chapter.
