Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs (ASPs) were initially developed to reduce costs of antibiotic drugs used in hospitals. Over time, ASPs have evolved focusing more on reducing inappropriate antibiotic use and overuse of antibiotics attempting to improve patient care and reduce the development of antibiotic resistance now and in the future. Various guidelines and guidance documents help to provide a framework for developing an ASP and to direct ASPs on which interventions focus their time and efforts. This chapter will review key antimicrobial stewardship strategies, discuss their objectives, and describe their clinical and institutional outcomes with the goal of conveying a foundational understanding of the development, implementation, and funding necessary to achieve a successful ASP.

摘要
