Several different viruses and some bacterial pathogens are known to cause aseptic meningitis. Less commonly, meningeal infections caused by fungi or parasites, or inflammatory conditions that are unrelated to infection, are to blame. Overall, the most common causes of aseptic meningitis include enteroviruses and herpes simplex virus. In areas that are endemic for Lyme disease, early disseminated infection with Borrelia burgdorferi is also a very common cause. These and other potential etiologies will be summarized. Following descriptions of epidemiologic risk factors for developing aseptic meningitis, the approach to diagnostic testing, and key concepts related to patient management will be discussed.
