Blue-green bacteria (Cyanobacteria) are prokaryotic algae that have no nucleus or chloroplast. They do, however, possess chlorophyll a, which is necessary for photosynthesis and is different from the chlorophyll of photosynthetic bacteria. Unlike bacteria, the photosynthesis of blue-green bacteria also produces oxygen, which is why they are classified as algae.
