Towards Sustainable Lithium-Ion Battery Recycling in Chile: A Conceptual Process Flowchart Proposal

Considering the global increase in battery-powered devices and electric vehicles, lithium-ion battery (LIB) recycling has become an important issue for environmental sustainability and technological efficiency In Chile, a country with significant lithium reserves, it is essential to develop effective recycling strategies and methods for batteries. This approach should prioritize circularity and align with national regulatory requirements. The methodology includes a documentary review of the LIB market and the most commonly used recycling processes, evaluating mechanical, pyrometallurgical, and hydrometallurgical techniques. A conceptual recycling process is proposed, encompassing manual disassembly, mechanical crushing, and hydrometallurgical separation to recover valuable materials, including lithium, nickel, and cobalt. The proposed scheme aims to contribute to developing an efficient and sustainable lithium-ion battery recycling industry in Chile. Additionally, it aims to familiarize individuals with aspects of lithium-ion battery technology, particularly the primary sector responsible for managing their end-of-life: the recycling industry, in alignment with current international standards.
