Carbon Footprints of Indian Forest Degradation and Deforestation

India’s escalating carbon footprint, exacerbated by significant forest degradation, necessitates a comprehensive strategy rooted in compelling facts. According to geospatial data from Global Forest Watch, India lost 117,000 hectares (ha) of natural forest from 2010 to 2022, emitting a staggering 62.9 million tons (Mt) of CO2. India, as the second-highest global contributor to deforestation, has lost 668,400 ha in the past three decades. Climate change, propelled by a shifting carbon footprint, has notably intensified deforestation in India, surging from 384,000 ha between 1990 and 2000 to 668,400 ha between 2015 and 2020. However, India State of Forest Report for 2021 indicates a nominal net gain in overall forest cover; a concerning trend of degradation across 15,183 km2 questions the efficacy of existing conservation efforts. India’s tropical forests, despite being the fifth-largest global emitter, hold immense potential as carbon storage facilities. The intricate relationship between carbon footprint and forest degradation underscores the urgency for sustainable practices. Noteworthy facts include India’s role as the second-largest contributor to deforestation globally and the potential of well-managed forests for carbon sequestration. The large-scale deforestation poses a severe threat, impacting local and global climates. The comprehensive strategy for India should involve strengthening initiatives like Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+), supporting reforestation projects, estimating accurate carbon footprint of key drivers of deforestation, enhancing monitoring with geospatial data, empowering local communities, and fostering international collaboration.
