Clinicians Heavily Involved in Education: Clinician-Educators and Similar Tracks
摘要
Despite decades of experience with clinician-educator tracks, systems for academic promotion remain oriented toward research. Many educators feel disadvantaged in the process. For successful careers, clinician-educators need to develop robust professional identities and supportive communities of practice. Appropriate selection of track and allocation of effort are essential. An academic plan (ADP) based on consensus guidelines covers all activities considered in promotion and can guide comprehensive career development. Regular progress reviews and ADP updates are essential as expectations for promotion may change. Faculty development and mentoring should be sought both within the institution and through national resources. Academies of Medical Educators and national organizations can provide multiple resources for career development. Promotion requires documenting the quantity, quality, and impact of all academic activities; increasing reputation as an educator within the institution and beyond; and evidence of contributing to the development and improvement of medical education. Validation from external colleagues is essential in promotion. An educator’s portfolio can support career development as well form part of the promotion application. Narrative sections of the promotion dossier and letters of support should include information to clarify the significance of achievements for reviewers from different academic backgrounds.
