Promotion for Clinicians on Tenure-Eligible Tracks

Tenure-eligible tracks are available to clinicians at 85% of US medical schools and may be the most appropriate choice, especially for faculty members with interests in all three academic domains, a commitment to scholarship, and aspirations to leadership positions. Selection of a tenure track must be a deliberate choice made after consideration of all alternatives and with full understanding of the requirements and deadlines for award of tenure. Faculty members embarking on a tenure track must ensure appropriate support to succeed, including mentors and advisors, financial support, and all necessary resources. An appropriate academic plan (ADP) is essential. This must be regularly reviewed and updated to ensure progress toward fulfilling the criteria for award of tenure within the mandated time period. This award may be linked to promotion to associate professor. Tenure differs from other tracks in the time restrictions, expectations for achievements in multiple domains, evidence of recognition beyond the institution, and potential for leadership. Tenure represents institutional investment in a “rising star” faculty member and theoretically guarantees academic freedom and some protection from dismissal. Despite ongoing criticisms and erosion of its status, tenure remains a prestigious award for faculty members of many medical schools.
