In 1949, the founding year of the Federal Republic of Germany, the meteorologist Günter RiedelRiedel, Günter, already mentioned in Sect. 7.1.3 , contacted Helmut RuskaRuska, Helmut about a patent matter involving a nebulizer with which penicillin could be introduced as deeply as possible into the lungs, for example for the treatment of pneumonia. As Riedel explained, he had dealt with similar questions in his research on gas protection during the war, in which a supermicroscope of the LfÜ had also been used.1011 The device he designed used the specialized knowledge acquired there, which had not yet been exploited, not to introduce a chemical or biological warfare agentWarfare agents, chemical and biological, but to “administer a dose of penicillin to the patient […] without loss and as deeply as possible into the lung.” With this device, it was now possible to select the vapor pressure and the ambient temperature in such a way as to create a homogeneous aerosol with the “particle size of the so-called Maskenbrechers (mask breaker)” which “reaches deep into the respiratory tract with the next breath.” The results obtained in the electron microscope investigation of the effects of chemical warfare agentsWarfare agents, chemical and biological could thus be used for peaceful purposes without major changes.1014 Out of old loyalty, Riedel had offered this device to the Siemens corporation, but so far had not received any positive feedback.
