This chapter explores the basis of our responses to first-person authority, particularly in relation to the value of autonomous agency and the accuracy of infants’ communicative acts, while also delving into the realm of childhood play. Since first-person authority belongs to the communicative sphere and play is a fundamental aspect of childhood, the chapter investigates potential connections between communication and play. It examines the idea that communication and play may share a common developmental origin. Additionally, it suggests that our responsiveness to infants during early social play reflects similarities to the later recognition of children’s first-person authority in communication, despite their differences.
