This chapter introduces the technical terms associated with the principles or laws of mechanics from the historical point of view. In particular, the meaning of the principle of linear momentum (PLM) and the principle of angular momentum (PAM) are explained. To understand the motivation of this study, it is embedded into the historiographical, scientific, and philosophical context. To better use and follow this study, its purpose, methodology, and structure is outlined. The description of the central argument and the explanation of the term “derivation” often used in this study makes it more intelligible. Finally, the problem of historical vs. modern notation and terminology is addressed.

摘要

This chapter introduces the technical terms associated with the principles or laws of mechanics from the historical point of view. In particular, the meaning of the principle of linear momentum (PLM) and the principle of angular momentum (PAM) are explained. To understand the motivation of this study, it is embedded into the historiographical, scientific, and philosophical context. To better use and follow this study, its purpose, methodology, and structure is outlined. The description of the central argument and the explanation of the term “derivation” often used in this study makes it more intelligible. Finally, the problem of historical vs. modern notation and terminology is addressed.
