As the overall incidence and impact of revision total hip arthroplasty (rTHA) increases on a global scale, evaluation of outcomes after revision surgery remains critical in improving care for this complex patient population. Methods of evaluating outcomes after rTHA continue to evolve. Early studies provide important data on implant and technique performance over time. These studies highlight revision rates, cause for revision, and radiographic metrics—commonly used markers of surgeon-assessed success after rTHA. Primary and revision THA are performed to decrease pain and improve function and quality of life. Born out of a call for a more patient-centric assessment of success, recent investigations now analyze patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) after rTHA. This chapter provides a brief history of PROM collection in the United States along with the most up-to-date look at how rTHA outcomes are evaluated focusing on patient-reported outcome measures.
