When One Is Just Not Enough: An Autoethnographic Journey into Undertaking a Second PhD
摘要
According to the OECD, in 2021, 1% of the population had achieved a doctorate or equivalent qualification. Of that 1%, anecdotally, less than 1% have attained two or more doctorates. Doctoral journeys are long-term projects that can be riddled with tension. Work/life/study balance can be so easily skewed. The by-product of isolation can weigh on mental health, and the whole process requires a commitment that can be damaging to relationships. This chapter explores my motivation to undertake a second doctorate. Utilising autoethnography as method, I detail the challenges and the triumphs I experienced whilst managing the rigours of researching and writing. I also interrogate the influences that initiated, guided and maintained the goal-oriented focus that allowed me to complete a second PhD.
