Exploring Self-care Practices Among M.Phil. Clinical Psychology Trainees: A Qualitative Study

Clinical psychology is one of the most sought-after professions in the field of psychology. This field requires expertise not only in the pursuit of understanding disorders, but also provide appropriate therapy. In India, Rehabilitation Council of India has been providing licensed training for clinical psychologist at M.Phil. Level. Based on the latest update, the same might change in the upcoming year. Through this study, the researchers aim to understanding on the various self-care strategies practiced among the M.Phil. clinical psychology trainees. The study sought to explore the subjective experiences and complexities that affect self-care behaviours within the participants. It also dives into the environmental influences affecting self-care and builds an in-depth understanding to help future students and educational organizations. A snowball sampling technique was used to gather information from current M.Phil. clinical psychology trainees who are facing struggles in maintaining their self-care routine during the course. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to gather comprehensive data among 7 participants. Thematic analysis was conducted to identify patterns, themes, and sub-themes across the interviews. Through this we were able to explore the factors influencing self-care, its importance and effectiveness. The study gave three main themes, which are distorted routines and functioning, academic stressors and personalized strategies, each of these themes are elaborated with sub themes under them. The study highlighted the need for considering the psychological well-being, physical health and social development of M.Phil. clinical psychology trainees by looking into their subjective experiences, personal struggles and benefits of self-care.
