My career as a mathematics teacher and mathematics education researcher might be characterized as an attempt both to understand the nature of student thinking about mathematics and to create opportunities for classrooms to become places that invite students to thoughtfully engage with mathematics. In this essay I revisit some of the origins of my multi-decade journey and describe some of the early influences on the path I pursued.
