The question “Where is the Math?” has become an adage in the field of Mathematics Education in the last decade or so. It features in the defences of theses and dissertations of graduate students, in peer-reviews of manuscripts submitted to key journals, and it is on mathematics educators’ minds when communicating their research to various. This question has also been addressed explicitly in several publications, highlighting the traits and trends in the field. The overarching aim of this book is to push the discourse beyond the binarism of presence and absence of Mathematics in Mathematics Education research by casting light on the potential of the former to act as a generator of the latter. We raise the question “Where is Mathematics in your Mathematics Education research?” inquisitively, wishing to open the space for personal reflections on how Mathematics can spur, fuel, inform, and possibly interfere with or hinder, research in Mathematics Education. We are interested in capturing the multifacetedness and the complexity of this phenomenon. To surface these individual and collective perspectives, we turned to accomplished scholars who made a substantial contribution to Mathematics Education and who are recognized as leaders in their respective areas. Where is the Mathematics in your Math Education research? Personal accounts of leading educators provides space for celebrated minds of our field to share their wisdom regarding the generative role that Mathematics has played for them.
