摘要

Social sustainability, one of the three pillars of sustainability, can advance through developing and applying sustainability metrics. This chapter defines social sustainability and then addresses the application of social sustainability metrics to measure sustainability performance within the economy and environment. Although many indicators are available to assess public health, education, stakeholders’ participation, equality, equity, justice, and management review, more research is needed to establish multidimensional indices. The social acceptability of consumers is an essential factor for achieving a comprehensive social assessment from the demand side. Moreover, adequate feedback mechanisms, vital transparency, and end-of-life responsibility might allow consumers to make more informed and aware purchasing choices.
