The Martian environment is characterized by airborne mineral dust that extends between the surface and an altitude of up to 80 km, and this dust is a significant factor for any system on the surface (Forget and Montabone in 47th International Conference on Environmental Systems ICES-2017-175, Charleston, South Carolina, 2017). Terrestrial dust storms have received considerable attention in atmospheric research because of the consequences for humans and ecosystems, but dust transport is often neglected as a geomorphological process even though the loess that covers about 10% of Earth’s land surface is overwhelmingly accepted as originating from dust deposition
