Conclusions

This book unravels the complexity of regionalism in the Americas, tracing its evolution from its origins to the era of Liquid Regionalism. We explore how political, economic, and social factors have shaped initiatives ranging from informal consultations to deep integration projects. The concept of Liquid Regionalism—marked by fluidity, volatility, and weak commitments—provides a framework to understand the collapse of some regional initiatives and the resilience of others. The analysis highlights how inconsistent leadership, dependence on national political contexts, and ideological divides have undermined these initiatives, limiting their capacity to address urgent needs, such as the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite these challenges, the book emphasises the need to reverse Liquid Regionalism’s trajectory by reassessing institutional structures, increasing civil society engagement, and fostering stronger coordination mechanisms. Drawing lessons from other regions, we advocate for innovative strategies to revitalise regionalism, ensuring it adapts to contemporary challenges. This book not only critically examines the state of regionalism in the Americas but also calls for renewed efforts to build solid and resilient frameworks. Such renewal is essential to address emerging global and regional challenges and to advance sustainable development and prosperity for American societies.
