The chapter will begin with an examination of Evagrius of Pontus’s insights on the formation of emotions. It will then turn to the eight passions that obstruct spiritual clarity. Particular attention will be given to Evagrius’s remedies for overcoming them. Finally, the chapter will apply these teachings to the specific negative emotions that arise in moments of aesthetic shock: fear, pity, and disgust.
