Background: Over the past two decades, there has been a rapid expansion in literature concerning artificial intelligence (AIArtificial Intelligence (AI)) in ophthalmologyOphthalmology, showcasing its pivotal role in advancing this field. This analysis aims to offer a comprehensive longitudinal bibliometric assessment of AIArtificial Intelligence (AI)-focused papers in ophthalmologyOphthalmology. Methods: With timespan from January 1st, 2019 to December 31st, 2023, we retrieved publications related to artificial intelligence in ophthalmologyArtificial intelligence in ophthalmology from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database. Our analysis encompassed annual scientific output, leading authors, highly cited documents, productive countries, institutions, and journals. Additionally, we conducted a co-citation analysis of literature, examined the top co-occurring keywords, and performed a cluster analysis based on keyword co-occurrence. Data visualization was conducted using VOSviewer. Results: Totally, 3314 papers related to AIArtificial Intelligence (AI) in ophthalmologyOphthalmology were examined, showcasing a surge in output from 2019 to 2023, followed by a subsequent decline. Prevalent contributors included China and the USA, with prolific author Ting DSW standing out. Noteworthy journals such as “Scientific Reports” and “Ophthalmology” were prominent. Keywords analysis revealed a burgeoning interest in OCT parameters, AIArtificial Intelligence (AI) techniques, and their practical applications in ophthalmologyOphthalmology, signaling dynamic research trajectories within the evolutionary progress of this field. Conclusion: This analysis represented an in-depth overview of AIArtificial Intelligence (AI) in ophthalmologyOphthalmology research, aiding scientists in grasping the knowledge of frontier domains and potential implications of AIArtificial Intelligence (AI). Future research is expected to explore the link between ocular and systemic biomarkersSystemic biomarker, telemedicine, real-world studies, and the advancement and application of novel AIArtificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms, like visual converters.
