The health of the patients for whom we care is undoubtedly influenced by their social situation. It is imperative for the physician to learn about these social determinants in order to promote health equity. However, teaching with the goal of recognizing and addressing these issues may fall short if traditional pedagogies are utilized. Transformative learning is an educational theory that focuses on the transformation of perspective. Using this theoretical framework facilitates a shift in the frame of reference, allowing educators to more effectively teach socially conscious practice in the clinical learning environment.
