Tourism data spaces, as dynamic ecosystems for data collection, analysis, and sharing, are identified as critical for improving decision making, improving stakeholder collaboration, and promoting sustainable tourism. Based on data from 18 European smart tourism destinations, the article analyzes DMOs’ data-driven practices at different stages of smart maturity The article identifies that destination maturity level influences data sources, storage and processing, as well as data sharing and destinations in higher levels are adopting advanced tools and systems. The analysis highlights challenges such as lack of data analytical skills, trust, and interoperability, and gives recommendations for tourism data space. The article concludes that while data sharing practices among DMOs are evolving, there remain barriers, particularly in less mature destinations, which can be addressed through the implementation of common European tourism data space.
