In the 2010s, the ideal of an independent cyberspace was advanced by a new invention: cryptocurrency. Peer-to-peer architectures were evolved to transmit money rather than content, performing and recording anonymous financial transactions over a public global ledger. Concepts like “blockchain,” “mining,” and “smart contract” enabled a new gold rush which made many utopians rich. While cryptocurrency was used for speculation and fraud, it also saw positive, innovative applications for free international trade. Problems like proof of identity, energy consumption, and asset security have been dealt with at the organizational level, though this reduced the original freedom of the system. In the end, digital currency is possibly here to stay, but only as part of a regulated ecosystem.
