Multiple forces are tearing the Internet into pieces. The world has become interconnected in social, economic, and cultural terms; we still lack global institutions that can effectively govern the effects on people’s lives. A small group of tech tycoons has amassed sufficient power to deprive everybody else of democratic rights. Governments try to reassert their sovereignty by pushing for the introduction of technical control points in the Internet’s architecture. Big tech companies try to consolidate their pervasive presence in our lives and turn us into production factors. A positive response to these forces would be the birth of fair supranational institutions, but the current geopolitical climate makes that difficult and risky. Thus, Europe’s approach, balancing freedom and rights through regulation, is complex but the only practical one. In any case, in any plan to put people under control, the outcome is always decided by each person’s reaction. It is up to us to use the Internet for our own growth and fulfillment rather than be used by others for their objectives. Even today, there are ways to keep the light on; it is our choice whether to make that effort.
