This chapter performs a Thematic Analysis of a sample of news articles covering the political violence that erupted in West Bengal, an Indian state, in the immediate aftermath of the 2024 Indian general elections. Analysis indicates that the news discourse on the post-poll violence was dominated by power struggles, political blame games and misinformation. The online news articles also branded West Bengal as a state prone to electoral violence. This discursive trope positioned West Bengal as a unique case in the audience’s psyche and normalised the biases and inflammatory political statements. Covering electoral or post-poll violence risks inadvertently amplifying fear and mass panic among the voters and contesting candidates. This chapter cautions that unethical and insensitive news coverage may spread false narratives and fuel the conflict, suppressing peace-building measures.
