India has been enduring ethnic and religious conflicts and, in the northeastern states, they have been more intense. While these conflicts are reported in the national media, the sociopolitical and geographical distance leads to sidelining, misrepresentations and propagation of stereotypes. Nevertheless, the Indian political dynamics and media landscape have been witnessing tremendous changes and this chapter explores how, in the post-economic liberalisation era, the national mainstream media platforms have represented the people of the northeastern part of India and their ethnic and religious clashes in their news reports. Also, this chapter analyses the nature of ethnic and religious clashes in the different parts of Northeast India and focuses on media representation of the tribal communities to throw some critical light on how the national media creates stereotypes. From the period between the economic liberalisation of India in 1991 to the Manipur violence of 2023, several events of communal and ethnic violence and the coverage of those conflicts in national mainstream media are discussed in this chapter.
