This chapter examines Canada’s response to Jihadist and far-right groups by considering the security, defence and justice approaches. A comparison of these two approaches is salient, given a historical fixation by the national security state on Jihadi extremism to the neglect of far-right extremism and its infiltration of Canadian institutions. It also becomes evident that narratives and biases against the Muslim population have limited the effect of counterterror efforts. In focusing on Jihadist terror, Canada has missed the rise of far-right terrorism while simultaneously subjecting local Canadian Muslims to an isolating narrative, which has further engendered radicalization. The chapter finds that Canada has made some progress in addressing this neglect in understanding radicalization.
