Artificial Intelligence in Enhancing Korean High School Students’ English Skills
摘要
This chapter investigates the innovative application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to enhance English language skills of Korean high school students, focusing on both productive and receptive skills. This chapter begins by outlining reviews Korea’s initiatives to innovate English education through digital transformation, emphasizing the nation’s commitment to integrating advanced computer technologies. It then addresses the motivations for these innovations, identifying critical challenges, such as the lack of a unified digital pedagogical framework and insufficient empirical support for newly implemented educational technologies (Edtech). In addressing these challenges, the chapter presents two case studies that demonstrate the effectiveness of AI-driven language learning programs in improving reading comprehension for the Korean College Scholastic Aptitude Test (K-CSAT) and in enhancing English sentence production. The findings indicate that interactive engagement with generative AI significantly improves Korean learners’ ability to identify main ideas through top-down processing, particularly when supported by teacher guidance to develop receptive skills. For productive skills, AI’s corrective feedback mechanisms are shown to facilitate the acquisition of complex sentence structures effectively. The chapter suggests a comprehensive approach to implementing AI in English language education, calling for a collaborative effort between linguistics, second language acquisition (SLA) theory, and computer science.
