Interconnection Between Agriculture and Livelihoods in Har-ki-Dun Valley, Uttarakhand, Indian Himalaya

The Har-Ki-Dun Valley is located in the Uttarkashi district of the Uttarakhand Himalayas. The area consists of the Rupin and Supin valleys, crucial water sources for the Tons River, the main tributary of the Yamuna River. Traditionally, the primary occupations of the villagers in the region have been trading, sheep rearing, and the cultivation of buckwheat, locally known as patti (Fagopyrum esculentum), fanfare (Fagopyrum talcum), and potatoes. The main groups of people living in the area are Jadhs, Brahmins, and Thakurs. Unfortunately, the local villagers lack basic facilities such as water, electricity, proper schools, hospitals, and employment, as these facilities are only available in a few locations. Hill agriculture in the Himalayan region has faced several challenges, including issues related to the region’s topography, lack of progress among farmers, soil fertility, difficult access to market facilities, and input problems. The primary factors affecting the profile of hill regions include extensive deforestation, soil erosion, intense rainfall, snowfall, frost, acidic soil, lack of infrastructure, and inadequate transportation options. Traditional crops have been replaced by apple-based agriculture, resulting in a significant decline in the production of traditional crops. The development of apple orchards has become a major aspect of rural household lives and economies in recent decades. Hill agriculture faces challenges such as lack of institutional support, technical know-how, poor marketing, inadequate infrastructure, lack of funds, soil erosion due to rolling topography, lack of irrigation facilities, and shortage of farm inputs. Due to the lack of technological expertise, farmers are hesitant to adopt a high-yielding variety of seeds, resulting in a significant difference in crop production. The main goal of this study is to establish an understanding of the interconnected nature of livelihoods in the Har-Ki-Dun Valley in the Himalayan region, demonstrate how agriculture is disrupting the natural balance of this area, and find solutions to address these issues.
