Recognizing and respecting the interconnection between human society and ecosystem services is crucial for ensuring sustainable resource management, preserving biodiversity, and promoting environmental sustainability. The residents of the Himalayan region heavily rely on ecosystem services to support their livelihoods, sustain themselves, and maintain their cultural traditions. This study, centered on Har-ki-Dun Valley in Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand state, India, aims to determine the extent of dependency on ecosystem services by indigenous communities in the Himalayas. The study’s primary objective is to evaluate the interconnectedness between ecosystem services and sustainable development in the Himalayas and assess their impact on the environment and society. The findings of this study will not only contribute to academic knowledge but also have significant implications for the indigenous communities in the Himalayas, highlighting the importance of their traditional practices and knowledge in maintaining the region’s ecosystem.
