Fostering Safety: Examining the Relationship Between Mental Health and Digital Creative Expression Among Young Artists Amid the COVID-19 Pandemic

In this chapter the author reflects on the relationship between mental health and young people’s digital art practices in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Young people use social media platforms such as Instagram and Tumblr to cultivate their identity and connect with online communities. The author draws attention to the connection between creative expression and emotion regulation and the use of creative practices to process and cope with one’s internal states. The COVID-19 pandemic provides a unique opportunity to examine how shifts in feelings of safety can impact one’s art practice. How do digital media and technology impact young people’s ability to play and express creativity? This chapter underscores the complex interplay between play, art-making, and mental health in the lives of young artists.
