Generative AI (Gen AI) is rapidly being implemented in various business sectors and has a wide array of applications in clinical care, healthcare administration and research. For healthcare delivery, Gen AI has the potential to streamline burdensome tasks such as documentation, coding, and generation of routine correspondence with insurance companies. One of the more exciting areas for clinicians is AI powered ambient dictation (also known as ambient scribes). This technology frees the clinician from typing information during a clinical encounter with the potential for improved patient visits and reduced “pajama time” post visit documentation with reducing clinician burnout. Other promising use casess for AI include clinical decision support, diagnostics, healthcare operations and research. Emerging uses that the clinician should be aware of are AI to accelerate drug discovery and for personalized medicine. This chapter presents an array of promising uses of AI to improve patient care, healthcare operations, and medical research.
