This article introduces the idea of research-based learning approaches and provides examples of such initiatives developed and implemented at the University of Porto (UPorto) and its Faculty of Engineering (FEUP). This pedagogical approach, in which students are directly engaged in research, is described and the benefits and challenges of its implementation are discussed. Specific projects that have been undertaken at UPorto and FEUP using this model are also described, including multidisciplinary initiatives and young researcher events.
