Foreign Language Training Potential for Universal Competences Development of Future Transport Sector Managers
摘要
Soft skills are of great importance for all the participants in the transport sector especially for future managers, personnel and project management professionals. The soft skills to be developed, called universal competencies, are suggested in the Federal State Educational Standards of Higher Education. The universal competence, directly related to teaching a foreign language, is formulated as the ability to carry out business communication in oral and written forms. Due to the peculiarities of the subject “Foreign Language,” it has a great potential for the development of other universal competencies. So, the goal was to develop an English textbook for future transport sector specialists, aimed not only at the formation of the foreign language communicative competence, but also at creating conditions for the development of certain universal competencies. To achieve this goal, the authors, firstly, highlighted the universal competencies of managers that can be involved in the process of foreign language learning, secondly, provided students with the necessary information about the identified universal competencies by selecting the content of English authentic texts, and, thirdly, designed the educational activities of students, that require application of universal competencies elements. The results of training as well as the survey of the students’ opinion confirmed the possibility of such an approach.
