The aim of the study was to evaluate maritime problem-based learning (PBL) and how it can enhance student engagement and competences in maritime education and training. Maritime study programmes are interdisciplinary and must provide both technical and non-technical soft skills for future maritime professionals. PBL as a teaching and learning method can integrate knowledge, skills, and soft skills in real-life tasks, but it can present challenges. PBL performance in maritime courses was evaluated in a project that involved 20 teachers and over 300 students from different maritime courses in the Estonian Maritime Academy. PBL was effective in integrating maritime knowledge and skills, and enhancing students' problem-solving, teamwork, communication, and self-leadership skills. PBL is not the best method for constructing a theoretical knowledge base in maritime. PBL increased students' learning motivation and teachers' collaboration. PBL is a suitable and beneficial teaching and learning method for maritime education and training, as it will prepare future maritime specialists with the competences they need for the industry.
