This study presents an overview of Ethiopian Djibouti Females at Makerspaces (EtD-FaM) project, which aimed to enhance the capacity of female lecturers, researchers, students and citizens by establishing Makerspaces for females only at five Ethiopian University of Applied Sciences and one at the University of Djibouti in Djibouti. Makerspaces have been emphasized as a powerful environment for acquiring practical skills and fostering innovation and entrepreneurship. In this vein, the aim of this project is to make use of the advantages offered by a Makerspace in order to tackle the skills gap and gender imbalances that are commonly seen in the higher education sectors of Ethiopia and Djibouti. Through a combination of the existing research on Makerspaces, case studies, and project document review, this paper explored the opportunities of Makerspaces and the challenges that expected during and after the EtD-FaM project implementation. Several research papers have been reviewed to answer the research question. Project documents were also reviewed to assess their impacts, in line with the proposed results; the potential of Makerspaces in fostering women’s empowerment and socio-economic development.
