Considering the Ethics of AI-Based Technologies in Biomedical and Health Informatics (BMHI) Education

Artificial intelligence (AI) is used in healthcare for treatment assessment, resource allocation, and diagnostics like X-rays, supporting professionals without making independent decisions. Ethical competence involves recognizing and resolving moral conflicts, prioritizing ethical values, and acting courageously in complex situations. In higher education, it enhances professional competence and research quality. Health and social care education traditionally focuses on justice and care ethics. With AI's growth in healthcare, higher education institutions must update their programs to address new ethical issues. This case study examines how ethics should be considered in the development of BMHI education, given the increasing use of artificial intelligence in healthcare. Matters to be considered are the Assessment List for Trustworthy AI (ALTAI) tool as an ethical decision-making framework, interdisciplinary and inter-stakeholder cooperation, continuous learning, and research and innovation.
