Despite the historicity of her work, Edith Wharton’s writing as a woman, and about the lives of women, remains compelling, especially due to the resonance of her stories with modern-day women’s experiences, and the gendered injustices that they illuminate. In this chapter, Wharton’s Provençale home, Sainte-Claire du Château, a place permeated by silences and of significant importance to her in the wake of the Great War, is considered as a creative wellspring during the remainder of her professional life. This is followed by a reflection on the position of women today and specific ways in which Wharton’s work, including the texts examined in this book, speaks to that.
