Arch bridges are among the oldest types of manmade structures globally. The art of bridge construction is evolving rapidly, with new methods being introduced in the industry. Stone and brick arch bridges, with a history of thousands of years, are proven to be among the most durable and reliable structures. Brick and Stone arch bridges were difficult to construct due to the need for precise centering/shuttering and accurate stone cutting. However, with the availability of modern machinery, materials, and advancements in precast technology, the use of centering to construct arch bridges is becoming less necessary. The utilization of precast concrete blocks in arch bridges as a substitute for stones was first implemented in the U.K. by Dr. Adrian Long, a professor at Queen's University Belfast, in conjunction with Macrete. This paper aims to elaborate the recent developments in the construction methodology of India's unreinforced precast arch bridges. Over 70 such bridges have been constructed with the LithelyArch technology in various parts of India within the span of five years. The LithelyArch technology was chosen not only for its cost-effectiveness, durability, and strength but also for its advantages such as zero maintenance cost and rapid construction. Drawing inspiration from the FlexiArch technology, the authors modified the construction methodology and incorporated new components like wire ropes instead of polymer strips to develop the LithelyArch bridge technology.
