Nowadays, it is almost impossible to evaluate the maxillary sinus without radiodiagnostic methods. All four of ultrasound, X-ray, CT, and MRI can be used to evaluate the sinus. Among the sinuses, the maxillary sinus is the most sensitive to ultrasounds. X-rays of the sinuses and the face are used as a first-level investigation for cases of facial trauma and sinus fractures, particularly for the maxillary sinus, as it is the most anterior and, therefore, the easiest to visualise. Currently, CT is the most widely used technique for the study of the sinuses, as it allows very accurate diagnosis and follow-up for various pathologies. It is also mandatory for preoperative planning of sinonasal surgeries. Lastly, although its uses are mostly complementary or overlapping with the uses of CT, MRI can still be used in certain cases as a primary choice. Despite their similarities, MRI provides better soft tissue resolution than CT, allowing better imaging and characterisation of inflammatory involvement of extra-sinus soft tissue and sinonasal masses.
