Artificial Intelligence (AI) presents a greater potential, pointing to the need for effective policy and regulatory mechanisms to bolster governance processes and address emerging deficits. AI’s influence is becoming pervasive across various policy sectors in Africa, including health, transportation, and education, and its impact on elections is no exception. This chapter explores the potential influence of AI on South Africa's electoral processes using the 2024 elections. The focus is mainly on how AI technologies could potentially threaten democratic integrity through disinformation, misinformation, and cyber vulnerabilities. As one of the African countries with high internet penetration and active social media usage, South Africa is vulnerable to AI-driven interference in voter behaviour. While AI provides tools to strengthen democracy, its potential to undermine it through manipulative techniques such as deepfakes, AI-generated robocalls, and fake images is significant. This chapter highlights the policy dilemma: how can we harness AI's democratic potential while minimising its threats? It also explores recommendations for safeguarding democracy in this context.
