Yoga for Eating Disorders
摘要
This chapter reviews the theory and research associated with the practice of yoga, embodiment, and prevention and treatment of eating disorders (EDs). The chapter begins with an introduction to yoga and the history of integrating yoga into the prevention and treatment of EDs. Next, embodiment theories are applied as potential mechanisms of change. Specifically, theories of embodiment are utilized to inform why yoga may be helpful as a prevention and treatment intervention, and to explain the importance of the how and in what contexts yoga is taught. Overall, the research reviewed suggests that yoga can be an effective tool in both reducing the risk of disordered eating and supporting recovery. Across various studies (including systematic reviews and meta-analyses), yoga is linked to reductions in ED symptoms, improvements in body image, and enhanced emotional regulation. Research suggests that yoga is generally safe and beneficial for individuals at risk for (or recovering from) EDs. However, researchers highlight the need for more specific guidelines to reduce potential risks. Guidance for future directions in research and practice is provided.
