This paper explores the intersection of Fintech and mobile operators, highlighting their significant roles in enhancing financial inclusion through network effects and technological innovations. The study examines how mobile operators leverage Fintech solutions, such as mobile payments and value-added services, to reduce customer churn and enhance loyalty. It also discusses the unintended benefits of mobile payments in reaching the financially excluded, especially in rural areas. Disruptive innovations of Fintechs like Alipay, JD Finance, and Revolut, have rapidly grown in market influence but their role in developing countries is under-researched. By investigating the competitive dynamics between Fintechs, telecoms, and traditional financial institutions, the study aims to uncover key factors driving the evolution of financial services and their potential impact on underserved populations. Seven qualitative elite in-person interviews conducted by the authors at conferences in Africa and the Middle East bridge theory and practice and uncover both opportunities and challenges for future development. The findings reveal the importance of innovation, strategic collaboration, and market orientation among the top managers of institutions in this space.
