Since the early 1990s, Lithuania has regarded the U.S. and NATO membership as vital for its security. It has been a strong supporter of transatlanticism within the EU, although the presidency of Donald Trump in 2016–2020 led to a reassessment of the country’s cautious stance towards security and defence cooperation within the EU. Domestic politics in the U.S. and the presence of threats from authoritarian Russia are likely to continue pushing Lithuania’s political elites to search for ways of maintaining American interest in Baltic security, while at the same time stepping up military cooperation with European NATO partners such as Germany, Poland and the UK.
