Since it gained independence in 1921, Ireland has had generally good relations with the U.S., which has been central to Ireland’s Celtic Tiger economic model in recent decades, as a key source of FDI and as a major trading partner. Ireland’s policy of neutrality marks it out as distinctive amongst the U.S.’ European partners (mostly NATO members), but this has not disrupted the overall political and economic relationship between Ireland and the U.S.
