Prefabricated Shelters

Prefabricated dwelling units are commonly used as an effective solution for emergency shelters. Prefabricated prototypes, mostly ready-made structures, are shipped to the disaster area during the emergency, either in pieces or fully assembled, built, or placed on-site. Prefabrication can also ease the self-help construction process. Prefabricated self-help kit homes are a potential solution to reduce housing costs and allow refugees to participate in the decision-making process concerning the design and build of their own homes. This is possible by eliminating paid labour and replacing it with sweat equity, allowing the shelter dwellers to have a high level of involvement during the pre-occupancy and construction stage. The content of this chapter encompasses various aspects of prefabrication methods, advantages, disadvantages, and specific examples. Prefab shelters are constructed in a factory and then assembled on-site, often featuring roofs, steel or aluminium frames, and walls made of polyvinyl or glass. They offer benefits like faster construction, higher quality workmanship, weather protection during manufacturing, and reduced labour costs. The shelters can be used for emergency or permanent housing and are suitable for various environments. Different materials and methods, such as modular, panelized, and kit-of-parts approaches, are employed in creating these shelters. A case study related to the Tohoku Earthquake in Japan illustrates the use of prefab shelters in disaster-stricken areas, covering various aspects of construction, challenges, and site layouts.
