According to UNHCR (2021), a shelter in the context of a refugee camp is a livable place that provides a safe, healthy, and dignified environment. How a shelter performs will depend on its form and function—the most efficient for its intended use. Apart from life-saving steps, it is a fundamental human right to have a place to live, and this should be maintained by offering shelter and a friendly atmosphere. A shelter’s architecture can significantly impact refugee safety and well-being. Moreover, since most refugee crises last much longer than initially expected, this should be considered in the shelter’s design from the outset. This chapter walks the reader into the refugee shelter design criteria. Strategies ranging from conceptual approaches to space design, access, living area, considerations for structure, and human comfort are discussed here. This chapter also delves into the critical relationship between the form and function of shelters, focusing on distinct shelter typologies tailored to the needs of refugees. It classifies refugee shelters into three categories based on their temporary to permanent housing solutions: emergency, transitional, and durable shelters. Emergency shelters address immediate accommodation needs in the wake of conflicts or natural disasters, prioritizing privacy and safety. Transitional shelters bridge the gap between emergencies and more permanent solutions, allowing for gradual adaptation and reuse of components. Durable shelters provide long-term housing, integrating cultural, climatic, and contextual considerations. The chapter emphasizes factors like wind, flood, and seismic resistance alongside indoor environmental quality elements such as natural lighting, ventilation, thermal comfort, personal security, and fire safety.
